A speedy incoming shelf cloud, moving in every possible direction… time lapse made here (google maps) in the neighborhood of Utrecht right next to Bunnik in the gas station “De Forten” on the  A12… after the shelf cloud came over there was no possibility to get in front of the shelf anymore… We were bombarded by heavy rain, lightning  and wind gusts … we stopped at the next gas station,  apparently a haven for shelter in this tormented weather spectacle. A lot of nice talks with a lot of Dutch people… with a few captured strikes on photo…

Iceland Day 6: Skaftafell

2010.07.06

Skaftafellsjokull… Right next to Skaftafell at a 10 minute walk flows a glacier which is pretty much approachable… rain started falling from noon and  wouldn’t stop until the next day…

Skaftafell National Park is situated between Kirkjubæjarklaustur, typically referred to as Klaustur, and Höfn in the south of Iceland.

It was founded on September 15, 1967, and enlarged twice afterwards. Today the park measures about 4807 km2 (2884 mi²), making it Iceland’s second largest national park. There you can find for example the valley Morsárdalur, the mountain Kristínartindar and the glacier Skaftafellsjökull (a spur of the Vatnajökull ice cap).

The landscape is very similar to some of the Alps, but it has been formed in thousands of years by different influences of fire (volcanic eruptions of Öræfajökull) and water (the glaciers Skeiðarájökull and Skaftafellsjökull), the rivers Skeiðará, Morsá und Skaftafellsá. Volcanic eruptions under the ice-cap can give rise to jökulhlaups (glacial floods) which swell the Skeiðará river massively. The sandy wasteland between the glacier and the sea caused by jökulhlaups is called the Sandur. The last jökulhlaup occurred in 1996.

Crystallized photons

2009.10.20

When sunlight meets oriented plate crystals, the same crystals that form sundogs a circumzenithal arc is formed. The refraction of rays nearly parallel rays through faces inclined at 90° produces very pure and well separated prismatic colours. The colours of the circumzenithal arc are purer than those of the rainbow.

Waiting

2009.07.27

What does one do when waiting for the repair service for his car? I am standing in front of our house in Beveren and my car won’t start… Took out the tripod, aimed and started firing the camera. Good choice… 2 hours of waiting, 1400 pictures for a calm nice little time lapse of some blue sky and training wannabe cumulonimbus in spe passing our front door in search for some hot and moist air…

The advantages…

2009.06.22

of boredom, le royaume du sofa… Of course I can imagine more spectacular things to do in such a defined soft space… but I won’t specifically enter on any moist details of the sofa adventures in the back stage of a local concert in Douai… anyway… it tends to be the cause of nice litte time-lapses…especially when nobody notices the camera…
